What amber, oud and leather smell like together

Aurisse Noctyron is built on three of the heaviest materials in perfumery: amber, oud and leather. Amber is warm and resinous, closer to honey and sun-warmed wood than to anything floral. Oud is dense, woody and slightly medicinal. Leather is dry and smoky. Together they make a base that reads as expensive before it reads as anything else.

What Noctyron smells like

Noctyron is bold but never loud. An evening-leaning scent that still earns its place at the office in colder months. It moves through three stages:

• Top — bergamot, black pepper, cardamom and grapefruit. A crisp, spicy opening. Fresh enough to feel polished, sharp enough to command attention from the first spray.
• Heart — lavender, geranium, saffron and cedarwood. Saffron is the bridge here. It carries a leathery quality of its own, which is why it sits so comfortably between the bright opening and the heavy base.
• Base — oud, amber, leather, patchouli, sandalwood and musk. This is where Noctyron lives. Oud and leather give it structure, amber wraps them in warmth, and the sandalwood and musk smooth the edges.

Why the amber and leather pairing works

Put amber next to leather and each one solves the other's problem.

Amber on its own can go flat. It is warm and pleasant, but without something to push against it reads as generic, the vague sweetness you find in a hundred department store bottles. Leather gives it structure and a little danger.

Leather on its own can be severe. Cold, dry, sometimes medicinal. Amber wraps it in warmth so it reads as expensive rather than clinical. The oud sits underneath both, adding a woody density that makes the whole base feel deeper than it otherwise would.

Why Noctyron lasts 12+ hours

Two reasons, and concentration is only one of them.

The first is where these materials sit in the fragrance. Amber, oud and leather are all base note materials with heavy molecular weight, meaning they evaporate slowly. A fragrance built on this foundation will almost always outlast one built on citrus and green notes.

The second is concentration. Eau de toilette typically runs between 5% and 15% fragrance oils. Eau de parfum sits around 15% to 20%. Extrait de parfum runs from 20% to 40%, and Noctyron sits at the top of that range. Concentration multiplies the longevity advantage rather than creating it.

Who Noctyron is not for

This is a heavy profile, and it will not suit everyone.

In hot, humid weather it can feel oppressive, both to you and to the people near you. If you want something for noon in August, look at a citrus or fresh woody profile instead.

It also skews formal. At a summer barbecue it reads as borrowed. At a winter dinner it reads as considered. Context does more work here than the fragrance does.

And if you dislike smoke, you will probably dislike leather and oud. That is not a flaw in the fragrance and it is not something you grow into. Some people simply do not enjoy that register.

How to wear it

1. Apply to clean, moisturised skin. Hydrated skin holds fragrance longer because the oils bind to skin lipids.
2. Target pulse points: wrists, neck, chest and behind the ears.
3. Use three to four sprays. With a 40% extrait, restraint is the point.
4. Do not rub your wrists together. It fractures the top notes.
5. Let it settle naturally for full sillage.

Common questions

Is amber the same as ambergris?
No. Ambergris is a marine material that smells salty and mineral. Amber is a warm resinous accord built from materials like labdanum and benzoin. Different smells, similar names.

What does oud actually smell like?
Dense, woody and slightly sweet, with a medicinal edge some people notice on first spray. It is one of the most polarising materials in perfumery, and it fades into the background as the fragrance settles.

When should I wear Noctyron?
Evenings and cold weather suit it best. Autumn and winter, dinners, formal occasions.

Can women wear it?
Yes. Amber, oud and leather have no inherent gender and have been used in fragrances marketed to women for decades.
